During the end of 2017, Elevate5 had been on the happy track of growth and had been for approximately 18 months when we realized a ‘SHIFT’ was coming. We had grown to a point of major decision, and none of the expected answers were fitting the need at the time.
We realized in this space, that we had been tracking to develop a traditional agency. One with a large team, who produced ample quantity (and quality) of work. And, with a shock, we realized that was NOT what we wanted. What we wanted was to create a business that allowed us to work even more deeply and create even more value for a small group of clients, and all while pouring into the development of our small, but mighty team.
And, for real, this felt like failure. Like we made a mistake. Like we started out after the wrong goal. Like we had lost our way.
And then a few weeks later, after having begun implementation of our revised business growth approach, during an impromptu conversation with our business coach, she congratulated us on our restructuring so that we could scale profitably and grow the business in the heart of how we aimed to truly serve.
Oh. You mean this was GROWTH?
Huh. Because it felt like death.
And isn’t that JUST what leaving our comfort zone feels like?
There is nothing like a little perspective. What we really wanted was to change lives WHILE we created websites… not just pop out some stellar coding. And this small shift perfectly aligned with our hearts, while forever changing our business and how we serve our clients. Who knew it could get even better.
This simply shows, as we should all know by now, there is only perfection living in our minds. Truly. No matter whether we are potty-training children or growing our businesses. When things are happening in real time, they are really a lot less glamorous than what we imaged they would be. We see and FEEL all the messy details: the hiccups, false starts, try agains, straight-up misses, lost days, dull conferences, and lackluster meetings. Yup, those happen to all. of. us.
Truthfully, all those things are part of the refining process both for us AND our businesses. If we just embrace them and their sticky imperfection and realize that they are simply propelling us down our path… we can instead see them as the gift they are. After all, propelling us forward are both the open and CLOSED doors. And that has been their job all along.
What ‘failure’ of yours needs some re-framing? How could it have been directing you to what was truly intended for your greater good?
Lots of love,
JoDee
